Types of heating systems

There are several different types of heating systems available for homes in New Jersey. Your FMA heating professional is an expert in determining the right equipment for your home based on design, living space, individual needs, and many other factors. To gain insight into the various types of heating systems available please read on.

Home heating systems are normally broadly described as either "warm air" or "hydronic." Warm air systems circulate heated air while hydronic systems utilize heated water to heat the home. There are also hybrid systems, called "hydro-air" which include the best features of both system types.

Warm air
A typical warm air system consists of a furnace which heats air and ducts which carry the heated air throughout the house. Modern warm air systems include a motorized blower which pushes heated air through the ductwork. While some people don't like warm air systems because they tend to heat unevenly and render "dry" heat, others prefer warm air systems since they can utilize the same ducts as air conditioning, are easily fitted with efficient humidifiers, and offer a convenient access for highly effective electronic air cleaners.

Hydronic
There are several different types of hydronic systems. All employ a "boiler" in which water is heated for distribution throughout the heating system. Many older systems contain a steam boiler in which water is heated until it turns to steam, rises throughout the piping to radiators, and returns to the boiler as water after it cools. Nowadays most hydronic systems circulate hot water through a distribution network consisting of radiators, baseboard and/or radiant heating.

While most people are aware of radiators and baseboard, radiant heating is much less common. Radiant heating systems circulate heated water through special tubing embedded in the floors, walls, or ceilings of the home. Radiant heating takes away no living space as there are no bulky radiators or baseboard units needed. Radiant heating is being used more and more for specialty areas, driveways for example, and can be incorporated into amenities such as bench seating and bathroom towel warmers.

Hydro air systems consist of a boiler connected to coils inside the home's ductwork. A blower pushes air over the coils and distributes it throughout the house. As with warm air, hydro-air systems often contain humidifiers and electronic air cleaners.
