Heating Oil Tanks / Underground storage tanks

Storage Tanks (UST's)
Recently, there has been a great deal of misinformation and confusion about residential underground heating oil storage tanks. These tanks ARE NOT regulated by the federal, state, or local governments. As a matter of fact, these statutes specifically exclude residential USTs.

Many of today's state-of-the-art heating oil tanks are warranted for thirty (30) years. That's because they are constructed from fiberglass or coated with material which protects the tank from corrosion.

Oil Tank Protection Programs
In the rare instance that an active residential heating oil tank should leak, our industry has developed a progressive 'call to action' program designed especially to meet the needs of the homeowner. Should the improbable discharge from your tank occur, you typically are covered for up to $100,000 of first party impact.

Please bear in mind, studies conducted by Environ Corporation in both 1987 and 1995 concluded that less than 1% of active residential heating oil tanks ever fail.

Note that fuel oil tanks are far different from motor fuel tanks. In fact, fuel oil tanks are smaller in size and hold generally only between 275 and 1,000 gallons.

Heating oil is also a far different product than gasoline. Because it can migrate through soil at a rate five times slower than that of gasoline, potential environmental impact of a leaking storage tank is greatly reduced.

Upgrade Your Tank
Get up to $3,000 to replace your old, underground storage tank.
With a  new state program, homeowners can apply for grants, which in many cases, fully cover the cost of replacing a non-leaking underground oil tank. If in the process of removing your old tank, a leak is found, money may be available through the NJ Department of Environmental Protection.

How the program works -- [Oil Tank Replacement]
The state will give you up $3,000 to help you remove your buried tank and replace it with a modern, environmentally sound tank.

Today's underground tanks are protected against corrosion making them worry free.   Above ground options include installation of a modern, clean tank in your basement, backyard, garage or utility room.

As with all government grant programs, there is paperwork to be filled out.   Keller-Depken will be happy to help you with this.
